While we have seen some somber predictions on how AI will impact the creative industry, we also see some incredibly innovative uses of AI image generation. One of those uses is the ability to create real-feeling storyboards or “DVD grabs”. They look realistic to the point that they remove the need to contract full sets to create impressive shoots. Redditor jarts uploaded a set of ‘DVD grabs’ from a movie called “Kurukshetra Hovarabord Showdown” (1984). In a clever title, jarts named the collection “Kurukshetra Hovarabord Showdown (1984) was a Bollywood attempt to cash in on the skateboarding craze sweeping the nation. It featured an all-star cast of characters in an epic hoverboard race across the Jalebi desert”. I fell for it and turned to IMDB to look for the movie. It could have easily been a Bollywood production of Mad Max, and I thought it would be a fun, trash video to watch.
Obviously, I did not find this movie on IMDB, but I did realize the power that an AI image generator now has to realize a vision. And not only that but do so on a very limited budget – Midjourny memberships run from $10 for a basic monthly plan to $600 for a yearly corporate plan.
We asked jarts what he was going for, and his surprising answer was “just messing around on midjourney“, in the same way, I guess, someone would scribble on a napkin.
One of the commenters on Reddit even added an AI-generated review:
The plot focuses on an epic hoverboard race across the treacherous Jalebi desert. The race features an intriguing mix of characters, from the handsome prince Raj, accompanied by his trusty manservant HandyAndy, to the weathered Bazaar Nomad, to the mystical alien raider Boggleduck. It was both a thrilling adventure and a hilarious tribute to the skateboarding craze in the 1980s. The action was intense and the competition was fierce. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. But one of the highlights of the film was the soundtrack. It featured some catchy new wave rock-n-roll with some old-fashioned soulful Hindi lyrics. It was a truly unique combination that got everybody in the theater grooving. Overall, Kurukshetra Hovarabord Showdown was an entertaining attempt to ride the wave of the Bollywood skateboarding craze. It featured an all-star cast, an epic hoverboard race, and a great soundtrack. If you’re looking for laughs and a bit of nostalgia, this is definitely a film to watch.
