The Royal Meteorological Society has announced the winners of the 2022 Weather Photographer of the Year competition in association with AccuWeather. Like every year, there are so many awe-inspiring photos that will just take your breath away. But you know the drill – there can be only one winner. This year, it was Christopher Ison for his dramatic, powerful image Storm Eunice. And since there are plenty more amazing images awarded in different categories, let’s check them all out and enjoy them together.
Christopher took the photo in Newhaven in the UK last year. Of a shortlist of 22 images chosen from entries representing 119 countries, his Storm Eunice was selected as the overall winner.
Christopher said about the photo: The judges commented that the power of nature is what they loved about this photo. “It is reminding us how small and insignificant we are as it conveys the dramatic movement and force of the sea together with the resistance offered by a man-made building.” And I couldn’t agree more. Photos like this always remind me how small we actually are, and it’s truly humbling. The second and the third place were awarded to Zhenhuan Zhou and Emili Vilamala Benito respectively. Zhenhuan Zhou was awarded for her photo Frozen, showing parts of Niagara Falls covered in ice. Emili Vilamala Benito won the third place for Ghost Under the Cliff, a mystical photo of spectacular Brocken Spectre. Personally, I loved both of these photos and I couldn’t get enough of them. There’s also the Young Weather Photographer of the Year. The 2022 title was awarded to Eris Pil from Pennsylvania, who just turned 17! Her photo entitled Mammatus Sunset was taken on a Google Pixel 3 phone, and Eris said about the photo: Since many of use phones to take photos nowadays, many contests have the mobile phone category – and Weather Photographer of the Year is no exception. This year, Aung Chan Thar from Myanmar was awarded in this category with a magical photo titled Sunset. Last but not least, there is a category in which the public gives its vote rather than the judges. And this year, the public favorite was Jamie Russell and his stunning image Departing Storm Over Bembridge Lifeboat Station.
