While Canon is preparing to officially announce the EOS R5 and EOS R6 mirrorless cameras in a couple of days, more information is leaking early, including a photo posted to Canon Watch that reveals more information about the EOS R5’s video modes. We’ve also received a tip here at DIYP from a trusted reliable source that reports some interesting details about both the EOS R5 and EOS R6.
First, let’s have a look at that photo of the EOS R5 flippy out LCD. Canon Watch says that it was a 512GB memory card inside the camera, which looks to hold about twenty-one and a half minutes of 8K DCI RAW footage at 24 frames per second. The menu on the screen also shows the availability of both 8K DCI (8192 x 4320) and 8K UHD (7680 x 4320) footage, as well as 4K DCI and 4K UHD.
CW also says that there is no crop in both 8K30fps or 4K120fps modes and that running the 8K RAW video for 20 minutes straight does not cause any overheating issues. One thing that might be a little disappointing to some is that there’s apparently no dual recording of video to both cards. So, if you are shooting 8K RAW but want to quickly look through low-res, low-bandwidth proxy files, it looks like you might be out of luck. In the list of details sent to us by our source, some we already knew. Some of it may confirm other rumours or at least give them a little more weight. Some of it is new information entirely – but possibly things people had hoped for or expected to happen.

The bit about “5G/WiFi” is potentially confusing. Do they mean you can actually throw a sim card in here and connect to a 5G network? Or do they just mean it’s compatible with regular old 5Ghz WiFi (as opposed to the regular even older 2.4Ghz WiFi)? I would suspect the latter, but you never know given the online and social media lean that cameras seem to be getting these days. If the “external grip” does indeed mean a vertical grip, then that will keep the portrait shooters happy. Canon does have the BG-E22 vertical grip for the EOS R, though, so it’s not something new to their mirrorless system – unlike Nikon who it seems may finally be planning to release something with the next iteration of Z6 and Z7 models.
