Leica is known for its prestigious and pricey cameras. But they also love launching limited-edition, redesigned cameras and lenses. The latest to get this transformation is Leica Q2, and the company teamed up with watch experts from Hodinkee for this one. The Leica Leica “Ghost” is the Q2 you already know but in a new, sleek suit. And unlike some other limited-edition Leicas, this one keeps almost the same price as the regular version.
This isn’t the first Leica to get the “ghost treatment.” Leica previously launched the M10-P with the same design. This “ghosting” has nothing to do with dating, of course. Like the M10-P before it, the Q2 has been redesigned to “invoke the ghostly faded bezels of some of our favorite well-loved dive watches,” as folks at Hodinkee explain. The camera’s magnesium alloy body has been painted in a soft gray and wrapped in smooth tonal gray leather. The leather bits were coated to protect the camera from the elements. The lens has also been coated in an anodized silver finish to match the camera. In this camera, the traditional “Leica red dot” has been omitted. Instead, there’s Leica’s vintage signature at the top plate, and it’s in yet another shade of gray. Even the tiniest of details are grey. There’s a silver aluminum thumb grip, and the camera comes with a grey woven Leica rope strap. On the back of the camera, framing the Q2’s 3-inch LCD display, there’s a subtle engraving showing “GHOST SET BY HODINKEE” above the display. Below the display, you’ll find the specific number for the set within the limited edition. Yes, all this grey reminded me of a certain book too.
As for the specs, nothing new to say here. The camera keeps the specs of the Leica Q2: The Leica Q2 “Ghost” is available in only 150 sets, paired with the Summilux 28mm f1.7 lens just like the regular black model. It’s available exclusively through Hodinkee’s website and it’s $200 more expensive than the regular Q2: $5,995.
