Kolari Vision has announced a new set of clip-in magnetic filters for the Canon EOS R5. They mount inside the camera body in front of the sensor but behind the lens. It’s compatible with native RF mount lenses or when using the EF to RF adapter. Kolari initially announced the clip-in filter system for the EOS R system last September. Now, though, it’s finally here. There are two types of filters available. One fits the EOS R, R5 and R6. The other is for the EOS RP. Both are available in various flavours, designed to work with cameras converted to full-spectrum (seeing both IR and UV, as well as visible light). The filters allow you to cut the range back down to see just the wavelengths you want.
The benefits of such a system over regular screw-on filters are fantastic. Firstly, as with screw-on filters you don’t have to choose whether you want your camera converted for only infrared or only ultraviolet. You can have both. Just get your sensor to see everything and block what you don’t want with the filter. But filters such as these offer a unique benefit over screw-on filters. With clip-ins, you don’t need to buy filters for all of the different lens diameters you own. And, yeah, sure, you could just buy the largest size and use step-up rings for the rest, but what about ultra-wide lenses like the various 14-24mm f/2.8 lenses out there that you can’t use a screw-on filter with? These clip-in filters also mean you don’t have to constantly swap that filter from one lens to another as you swap out lenses, either.
The system works, as you can see in the video above, by sticking a magnetic mount inside the opening of the lens mount. This then allows you to quickly and easily attach the various filters which are held on by that magnet.
Kolari Vision’s clip-in filters are available to pre-order now for $130 in various wavelengths, including 590nm, 665nm, 720nm and 850nm, full-spectrum clear, UV/IR Cut (for when you want to shoot just visible light), and neutral density in a range from 1 to 20 stops. Versions are available to fit either the Canon EOS RP or the Canon EOS R/R5/R6.
