Light painting with tubes is a pretty popular technique and it gives you so many creative possibilities. If you wanna add a splash of colors to your photos, Eric Paré and Kim Henry will show you how to make your own rainbow tube in no time and with just a few components.
You will need:
One T8 clear tubeAn adhesive rainbow vinyl rollOne roll of 10cm (3.9 in) wide cake collarA pair of scissorsTransparent tapeOptional: black gaffer tape
How to make: Start by cutting a piece of cake collar about the same length as the transparent tube. Then cut a slice of vinyl of the same length, but about half the width of the cake collar. Now, stick the vinyl on the cake collar. Kim adds that you should do it with patience and love. :) So, don’t forget these key ingredients; otherwise, you’ll end up with lots of air bubbles. Still, you can get rid of them by pressing them towards the edge of the vinyl. When you’re done sticking the vinyl to the cake collar, roll it up and insert it in the tube. Fix both ends with clear tape, and insert your flashlight inside the tube. If you use a T8 clear tube, it’s compatible with these end caps, so you can add one on top. That’s pretty much it, and you’re good to go. But, you can add a few more modifications. You can cut out a rainbow feather from vinyl and put it on top of the tube. Eric and Kim also added a few pieces of a black gaff to create some zebra patterns. Feel free to experiment, you can never go wrong with that. Here are a few examples of Eric’s photos with this DIY tube:
This is a pretty simple DIY project that can give you some awesome results. So, if you decide to make a rainbow tube of your own, feel free to share the photos with us, we’d love to see how it works for you. [How to make your own rainbow light-painting tube – Tube Stories 144 | Eric Paré / Xangle]
