Although Fujifilm seem to be intent on killing off their film products, they’re going full on with the whole Instax thing lately. And specifically a larger square format. The most recent being their launch of the Instax Square SQ10 Hybrid instant camera a few months ago, which produces 2.4×2.4″ (10x10cm) square prints. Now, Fujifilm have announced the new Instax Share SP-3 square format smartphone printer. Available in both black and white, the Instax Share SP-3, like the SQ10, prints 2.4×2.4″ (10x10cm) square prints. But it’ll do it right from your phone. It features built in Wi-Fi, and will churn out a print in around 13 seconds.

Along with the new printer comes an updated share app, with templates for creating collages, magazine covers and CD jackets. CD jackets? CDs? Really? People still use those? Oddly, the app also lets you search for hashtags on Instagram to choose photos you wish to print. Surely they’re not promoting copyright infringement by facilitating easy printing of other peoples images without permission?

Anyway, the Instax Share SP-3 comes prints out a 318DPI photo in around 13 seconds. Fuji say that the battery is good for around 160 prints on a full charge. The app works with both iOS and Android phones, and features “image intelligence” which automatically processes your image to set optimum printing brightness.

It sounds like Fujifilm are reaching with some of these “benefits”, but it still looks like a neat little instant printer for your phone. I’d certainly consider getting one, after I see how good it actually is in person. It uses the same Instax Square film used in the SQ10. You can pre-order the Fujifilm Instax Share SP-3 now for $199. They will begin to ship in November.
