macOS Catalina killed support for 32-Bit applications. This includes many (still) popular applications like Aperture and iPhoto, but also a lot of hardware for which no 64-Bit drivers exist. Including scanners. The two applications I mentioned have been saved, but now thanks to the folks at VueScan, so have thousands of scanners after they reverse-engineered the drivers. The update to 64-bit with Catalina meant that a lot of scanner owners lost native support for their devices, including many very popular models still in common use today, particularly slide and negative scanners....

The Nose on El Capitan is arguably one of the most famous routes in rock climbing. First climbed in 1957 in 45 days, it remains a formidable stomping ground for climbers who want to become legends. In October 2017, Brad Gobright and Jim Reynolds climbed it in 2 hours, 19 minutes, and 44 seconds, breaking the previous record by almost four minutes. Six months after the ascent, photographer Tristan Grezko released a time-lapse video of the two climbers scaling the 2,900 ft....

David Troup caught on camera a gigantic male grizzly bear in the Yukon Territory in Canada. First the video shows him rubbing his back against a tree....

December 3rd, 2015 was the day I bought my first camera. I carefully chose one body and one lens (Nikon D5300 and a prime 50mm). Increasing the ISO value increases the amount of noise in your images. So, you may want to shoot at the lowest ISO possible. But is it a good idea to shoot at ISO 100 whenever you can? We knew it was only a matter of time before YI Technology stepped into the world of 360° cameras. Hot on the heels of the GoPro Fusion, YI Technology have now announced their own, new YI 360 VR camera. Housing a pair of 12MP Sony CMOS IMX377 1/2.3″ sensors, each side has a 220° f/2.0 lens. The YI 360 VR is capable of producing 5.7K (5760×2880) 360° footage at 30fps....

Despite doing everything possible to kill off analogue photography, Fuji have done wonders for instant film. The trend has seen a resurgence in recent years, becoming extremely popular. This has not gone unnoticed, especially by Leica. Leica have now announced that they’re producing their own instant film camera, the SOFORT (German for “instant”). IT is being released with both colour and “warm shade of cream” monochrome film packs. It’s an interesting move for Leica, I think....

It’s that time of year again. It’s warming up, the sun’s coming back, and people are going outside to shoot more portraits. And as often happens when we reach this time of year, some of those portrait sessions happen on train tracks. And occasionally, people get killed by trains while shooting on those tracks. TODAY investigative correspondent Jeff Rossen wanted to find out just how difficult it was to hear a train coming up behind you....

Last year we told you about I’m Back, yet another solution to shoot digital images with your old film cameras. They were funding the project through Kickstarter and fell somewhat short of their goal, pulling in €35K of their €85K target. Now, though, they’ve rethought the project and I’m Back is back with lower expectations. Once again, funding is through Kickstarter with a €20,000 goal, it’s already gone way past that, hitting over €30K....

Well, this is a shocker. Image sharing platform Instagram has weighed in on the whole embedding thing after a second case has arisen involving post embedding and copyright infringement. Instagram has come forward, telling Ars Technica that it does NOT grant a sublicense to anybody who includes a public Instagram post in a website via its embed feature. The news seems to not only contradict the assertion of a New York federal judge but also most peoples interpretation of Instagram’s own terms and conditions....

The biggest problem with action cameras, pretty much any action camera, is the microphone. Whether it’s the original YI HD, the YI4K or even a GoPro, their sound just tends to suck pretty badly. But, it’s not really a surprise. The main intent of action cameras is for recording fast sports action with a wide field of view. There’s all kinds of noise going on that makes it virtually impossible to distinguish a voice easily anyway....

Summer is pretty much over but that’s no reason to stop shooting food and drink with a fresh summery vibe, at least according to food photographer Amie Miller. It turns out that May is National Photography Month and to celebrate, Canon USA have revealed a few current consumer trends in the world of photography. Consumers are showing more confidence behind the camera than ever, claiming that 80% of them rate their photography skills as “good to excellent”. It certainly goes some way towards explaining why the general public tend to undervalue professional photographers. As more and more images are being uploaded to social media, the desire to capture, share and save memories is clearly on the rise with 24% of consumers saying that they shoot up to around 300 photos per month....
