Washi Film V is probably the most special film announced in 2017 and I’ve had the privilege to be present when Lomig, the founder of Washi Film, introduced it at the Salon de la Photo in Paris last year. Since then I have always wanted to try it and see what it’s like to shoot with this very special film so that’s what we will be doing today. If you’ve never heard about this film before, let me introduce it briefly....

DJI’s Osmo Mobile gimbal has been hugely popular since it was first released. But, one thing that gave the competition so much advantage was its cost. There are plenty of misconceptions about the number of pixels, resolution, image size and so on, which can make us quite confused sometimes. To make things worse, the terms DPI (dots per inch) and PPI (pixels per inch) are often used interchangeably, which makes the understanding even more difficult. Essentially, DPI is important for printers. It’s a number of color dots printer uses to reproduce colors of the image. It’s also used for screen resolution, although PPI can also refer to screens as well....

And if you take a photo of it and want to sell it, beware – the state of New York might sue you. Vienna-based street photographer Michael Goldrei learned this the hard, but thankfully, not the hardest one. He didn’t get sued, but he got a warning from Alamy that his photo would be restricted for editorial use only....

FPV filming pilot from Sweden, Viggo Koch, recently took his drone to the Liseberg amusement park in Gothenburg. He followed the HELIX rollercoaster and thanks to some mad piloting skills, he shot footage that might make you a bit dizzy, but it will also make you go for a ride right now! Watching the video, you’ll notice that there are no people on the rollercoaster. That was done for safety reasons, and if you ever want to shoot something like this, keep in mind that you need permission and proper conditions....

When Google abandoned Nik Collection, DxO Labs acquired it and announced plans to develop it further. Despite going into receivership recently, DxO Labs hasn’t given up on updating the Nik Collection after all. According to the most recent announcement, the long-awaited update is coming in June 2018. The company has confirmed going into receivership for the sake of “restructuring the business.” As Photo Rumors reports, DxO Labs chose to file for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection....

SpaceX’s Starlink satellites have been controversial since before the first round of them were launched. Having recently launched more, which is going to keep happening for a while, the debates have sparked up again. There are currently 422 of the anticipated 12,000 (with 30,000 more applied for) Starlink satellites floating around our planet, and they’re already upsetting people. The two main reasons (if we remove all the tinfoil hat conspiracies) are that they will ruin our view of the night sky, which really sucks for astrophotography, and that it will make certain scientific studies all but impossible due to their overpowering brightness relative to the dim lights littered throughout the universe....

Yes, folks, you read that right. Facebook banned a photo of onions posted to the Facebook page of Canada-based seed company, Gaze Seed Company for being “overtly sexual”. The company used the image in a Facebook ad in order to sell Walla Walla sweet onion seeds on the platform when they were told that the image went against their advertising policies. The image used in the ad is of the seed packaging and shows a handful of the company’s onions in a wicker basket, which the Facebook says were positioned in a “sexually suggestive manner”....

As if Facebook’s photo rules and regulations didn’t seem stupid enough already. Now, according to Business Insider, they’re banning people for posting photographs of 30,000-year-old statues that have appeared in history books for decades. The Venus of Willendorf is an 11.1cm (4.4″) all figurine estimated to have been made sometime between 28,000 and 25,000 BCE. It currently resides in the Natural History Museum in Vienna. In December a photograph was posted by Italian arts activist, Laura Ghianda to Facebook....

Last month, Facebook and Instagram were hit by a major bug that exposed users’ passwords as plain text. Facebook has now confirmed that even more users were affected than it was initially estimated: and they are counted in millions. When the incident occurred, it was estimated that “tens of thousands” of Instagram users were affected by the bug. However, in an updated blog post, Facebook has confirmed that the issue impacted “millions of Instagram users....

Facebook introduced 3D photos back in 2018, allowing your photos to appear as if they had depth and “move” accordingly as you scroll. This interesting feature has been available only to phones with multiple cameras – until now. Thanks to AI, Facebook is now unrolling this feature to many more users. From now on, you’ll be able to turn any 2D photo into 3D, even your old pictures. It seems that the latest update is connected with previously announced “VR Memories....
